JACKSON / AMADOR COUNTY, Calif. — CAL FIRE has changed the residential outdoor burning status for state-responsibility areas in Amador County. Its official status table lists “Permit Required,” effective Friday, November 6, 2026, at 8 a.m. The change is relevant to rural homeowners managing piles of permitted vegetation waste, but does not mean anyone may light a fire whenever they choose.
What the new status actually means
The agency’s online status applies to state-responsibility areas (SRA), not automatically to every city parcel or location subject to another fire authority. Before any residential burn, the property owner must determine whether a CAL FIRE burn permit is required for that location and whether the local air-pollution control district has declared a permissible burn day.
CAL FIRE makes this distinction on the same status page: even when a county is listed as allowing burning, local air-district restrictions still apply. A fire permit does not override a no-burn day, and residents must comply with conditions printed on their permits.
What about nearby Gold Country counties?
In the same November 6 status update, CAL FIRE also lists Calaveras, El Dorado and Mariposa counties as requiring permits from 8 a.m. in their state-responsibility areas. The change does not imply identical local air-quality conditions across the region. Sacramento County remains listed as “Burning Suspended” in the state-responsibility area table.
Before burning vegetation
Residents should use the official CAL FIRE county status table, obtain an appropriate permit when required, check their local air district for the current day, and follow all setback, fire-control and safety conditions. If a property is in the incorporated City of Jackson or another local jurisdiction, confirm the rules with its responsible fire agency rather than assuming the SRA status applies.
